The Story
The Lake Travis Rugby Team started off with a group of students interested in Rugby, coached by 2 dads that both played rugby in school, college and for club teams. That was 2011.
The team organized in 2012, began Rugby Texas Cup play that year. The core group recruited enough kids to field a varsity and jv side. At the beginning of the season, over half the team had not ever even held a rugby ball. They ended the season in second place in Texas Div II High School Rugby. Not too bad for a first-year program.
At the beginning of the 2012-13 school year, a group of parents formed the LTHS Rugby Program to help with planning, fundraising and team support. Their first effort was a team building fundraiser project where the team built and ran a Haunted House that raised money for the team and for a YMCA at risk kids program.
In December 2012, the team fielded 3 teams for the first Austin HS 7’s Tourney. LT Teams finished 1st and 2nd.
The 2013 Season opening game was against Div 1 powerhouse Westlake. Varsity defeated their rivals 6 to 5. LT then won all of their regular season games the State Championship and was ranked #1 in Texas as well as 18th in the nation by the end of that season.
The 2020 season’s team built up to two sides, Varisty and JV, grew quickly as a team, scrimmaged The Woodlands in February to get ready for the season, then hosted Dallas Jesuit, securing a close victory in the last second of the match. LT travelled to Plano and won, then hosted Santa Monica, CA and won a close match with them too. LT then played at Round Rock, defeating them and moving to 4-0 on the season, a ranking of #2 in the state, and #23 in the nation. Ahead on the schedule was Westlake and Allen, and then the state tournament. LT’s powerful, possibly state-contending team’s season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with all play cancelled after spring break in March.
